Time to Gear Up for ND8 Certification
Category IBM/Lotus
ComputerWeekly notes that Lotus Notes is a Hot Skill, which is always a topic for heated discussions. I've sat with IT directors who are sure there is a glut of Lotus Notes developers, and they should be had as cheaply as possible. I've also had conversations that management is concerned that Notes professionals are hard to come by.
My take on the current state of Lotus knowledge workers is that if I could diagram the skill set of Notes professionals, it would look like an hourglass. Lots of people at the bottom who can do help desk, and then another set of incredibly talented developers and administrators at the top layer. My anecdotal experience is that there just aren't as many worker-bees for IBM/Lotus in the middle-tier.
Stephan Wissel comments on a thread by Nathan Freeman noting how easy it is for developers to create "bad applications." I don't know how to push the starter administrators and developers into the upper strata of the hourglass, but I think it's becoming obvious that the successful deployment of Notes Domino 8 is going to require those with "Hot Skills."

Chris, well, wouldn't it be nice if being certified was the golden key to accessing an exciting career in Notes Domino? I'm not meaning to sound too rhetorical, but I'm guessing that certification is a part of anyone's technical career management. I always think of it as the low bar for an evaluation, which means I expect it but until I see what a person can accomplish I'm not riding everything on a paper diploma.
