There are some interesting comments from InformationWeek's 6 Top Technologies for Remote Office Support by Michael Healey. IM is seen to be tremendously useful for remote employees, and it reduces e-mail activity.
My company has many subsidiaries, each with their own, independent infrastructure. Sametime is a terrific solution, because it can cross these borders.
Maybe the Sametime motto should be, "Works well with others."

As instant messaging use continues to grow within the corporate walls, some sites have seen a reduction in e-mail of 10% to 15% and faster response to questions
For an IM client the site, an IBM Lotus Notes shop, used Lotus Sametime, which has very nice integration with Notes. The company recently moved to Exchange but kept Sametime, not willing to switch to Office Communicator, the latest retooling of Microsoft's IM strategy. Redmond's previous IM attempts, notably Exchange 2000 Conference Server and Live Communication Server, have left many IT folks gun shy when it comes to Microsoft IM.
