White House CIO Gaff Over Lotus Notes
Category None
ComputerWorld's Mark Hall discusses the imbroglio of the missing White House e-mail records. After a conversation with David Gewirtz, Mark Hall is even more troubled with the answers from Theresa Payton, the White House CIO. Ms. Payton excuses her lax control over e-mail retention on account of the required cost, whereby she gives an estimate that is stunningly and ludicrously inflated.
The problem originated with the migration away from Lotus Notes, within the first term of the Bush administration. Republican Congressman Darrell Issa's explained this action as a necessary choice because Lotus Notes is akin to "Betamax" and "wagon wheel" technology.
Hall is shocked that any IT professional would allow this portrayl of "IBM's flagship messaging technology." And, he concludes that , "how she got her job is beyond anyone's guess, unless incompetence is a job requirement to work in the Bush White House."
Personally, I think it's all about the economy. I worked as an IBM Business Partner for 10 years, and one of my clients was the Treasury Department who rely on Domino for their messaging and collaboration. Maybe, Congressman Issa and CIO Payton could ask the Treasury Department to explain how it all works. If the information is presented carefully, and they talk slowly enough, it might work.
First, it starts with a series of tubes.
