Recap of Last Night's DC IBM Lotus User Group Social

Category DCNUG
FIrst off, hats off to those hardy souls that braved the rainy weather to gather at Rumors, last night. The key topics were about (1) doing more with less, (2) LotusSphere '07, (3) Nitix, and (4) the upcoming agenda for the user group.

  • It's apparent that many developers and administrators chaff at the limitations placed on Domino, when it could be doing so much more. Most of the comments were along the lines of "most managers don't understand" and "everyone is so monoculture." Personally, I'm not sure anyone even uses Microsoft Office to its full potential, so I expect that something as complex and full-featured as Notes is rarely to be taken to the edge. Still, the purpose of a user group is to facilitate the learning of how a technology can be best adapted to an organization.
  • I'm getting lots of hints that this year's Lotusphere is going to be a blast. IBM has the momentum going, and IBM insiders promise this years event will be dramatic. I have a submission in for a presentation, but no sessions will be confirmed until November. Well, Ed Brill's session, now infamous, has to continue--it's a tradition. I also expect to see another report of "Worst Practices" by Paul Mooney/Bill Buchan which is immensely entertaining as well as informative
  • Nitix is generating a lot of conversation as an SMB solution. A drop-in Linux hardware solutions, pre-configured with Domino and is used like an appliance is very appealing. If you haven't read Antony Satyadas' blog on Nitix, then I'd recommend it. It's now possible to provide an end-to-end Linux solution for application development and messaging.
  • For the upcoming user events we will be looking at a guest speaker for next month from IBM (it's a surprise, until I get confirmation), Kevin Pettitt's series on OpenNTF, and a demonstration from DYS Analytics, Inc. DYS Analytics provides performance monitoring which is customized for Domino. They have been working with Lotus products for as long as I remember, and continually win awards of recognition for their excellence. In November, the content will be on the wonders of 7.0.2 with as much demoing as we can squeeze in.

Things I'd like to be doing more of . . . integration with other platforms (LAMP, .NET), benchmarking existing systems for usage and performance, and developing on Sametime 7.5.
