Big Changes in Exchange Server 2007 -- Except Security

Category Messaging And Collaboration
eWeek has a review of the latest beta for Exchange 2007. You know, the messaging platform that won't let you do an in-place upgrade and it also requires all 64-bit hardware. eWeek discusses some of the new features with a concluding paragraph that deserves wide appreciation:

However, we'd be cautious about running Exchange on the perimeter given Microsoft's poor track record at providing timely security updates and an overwhelming volume of malicious e-mail aimed at the Exchange platform.

We think Exchange needs to be behind a gateway appliance running a hardened operating system. Indeed, some gateway appliance vendors have such a broad view of e-mail traffic that they have the ability to diagnose attacks and propagate rules to appliances well in advance of anti-virus vendors.

Gravatar Image2 - Sean, yes, you are correct. The Forefront Security add-in would be recommended by Microsoft to address security http://www.microsoft.com/forefront/2006/prodinfo/overview.mspx . It's an extra expense, and masks the issue of creating a secure architecture.

I'll stay with Domino. 2006 and Zero Viruses.

Gravatar Image1 - Isn't that where MS would expect you to use their Forefront Security for Exchange server?
