OK, Online Textbooks Aren't Interesting to Educators and Parents

Category Open Source
High School students actually rate on-line text books more favourably than they do game simulations, unlimited Internet access, mobile phone and social networking. Well, let me be a little bit clearer; at least in terms of educational value, the High Schoolers give something like a flexbook a thumbs-up.

These findings come from www.tomorrow.org, a national education non-profit organization providing leadership, research, and programming to support science, math, and technology education in America's schools. T.H.E. Journal has a summary of these findings at http://www.thejournal.com/articles/24099

Video conferencing and tablet PCs were rated the lowest by the High School population. Parents, on the other hand, rated video conference as their number one choice. Is it possible to read these statistics without a sense of humor ? Is it a surprise that teenagers are reluctant to come under the gaze of webcam interaction for educational uses ?

Seriously, though, it's demonstrably obvious that the intendend audience, students, are predisposed to on-line texts, and that the flexbook concept will meet a real need. My expectations are for the CK12.org momentum to continue to gain speed. Or, in light of the Virginia OSS physics textbook, I should say "velocity."

Gravatar Image1 - I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think you can measure life in terms of years. I think longevity doesn't necessarily have anything to do with happiness. I mean happiness comes from facing challenges and going out on a limb and taking risks. If you're not willing to take a risk for something you really care about, you might as well be dead.
