5 - I might be a little late to the party on this one but I had the same thought about this at about the same time you did. I opened a PMR and this is what I was told:

"The mail functionality that you will not have with a 7 server will be
- Resilient mail threads
- Conversations view
- Mail recall
- Out of Office improvements
And the calendar functionality that you will not have with a 7 server is
- Display of all day events over whole day
- Display of unprocessed calendar entries
- Display of canceled calendar entries"

4 - Jack,
spare 20 minutes and upgrade the box. Problem solved and DWA light flies (tongue out of cheek now).
If you *really* need to wait, you could look at WLM as an alternative. It is a Domino gMail lookalike and doesn't require that you touch your mail template. Have a look here: { Link }

3 - I tried it, tried copying over forms8, didn't have any effect that I could observe. DWA still worked, just missing some icons. Other than that, my mail file is at 8 on a 7.0.2 FP2 server with no problems.

2 - I ran every flavor of mail8.ntf beta on our 7.0.2, and I never had an inkling of a problem, even though I was also using BES and accessing it from both a 6.5 and a 7.0.2 client.

1 - You could TRY to also upload the forms8.nsf, but I would highly doubt the DWA lite would work on a 7 server. Running mail8.ntf against a 7.0.3 server should be fine, though there will be some missed functionality from the client end. Also, it would probably only be able to use forms7.nsf when you use DWA.
