IBM is Moving F-A-S-T

Category IBM/Lotus

Since Lotusphere '06, I have to admit that I've seen a transformation in IBM/Lotus, but it's been hard to put a finger on exactly what it is. With the latest rush of announcements, it's obvious that what I'm seeing is the effect of IBM having it's marketing act together.

Remember the announcement of the Notes Linux Client which completely surprised everyone Now, we have the unveiling of Quickplace 8. I consider myself relatively well-connected, and I did not hear a peep about this release until Rob Novak's posting. This is not a tiny, incremental adjustment to the venerable platform. The move to 8 includes AJAX and RSS integration--it brings Quickplace into Web 2.0.

What else is new? Oh, the announcement that Sametime will be running on Linux. Now, where did that come from? We have a nearly a 100% Linux solution from IBM/Lotus (no full admin or developer client).

Maybe we'll see IBM enlarge the circle of Linux distros to include Ubuntu, as H-P has just done. I think SuSE and RedHat are the right solution for Linux solutions, but a lot of SMBs are leaning towards completely FOSS. It'd be great to see IBM in that space.

It was remiss of me to neglect Bruce and Julian's PodCasts with Taking Notes on Quickplace and their upcoming session on Sametime. I don't think anything catches these two by surprise.

Gravatar Image2 - Me too. :( Hopefully, once Hannover is launched, they will put their efforts towards merging Domino Designer object bindings into Workplace Designer.

On the upside, in a purely Hannover environment, one should (I may be dramatically mistaken) be able to do a lot with just the Workplace Designer using just Java & JavaScript. That all seems linux compatible right out the gates.

As for the admin side, the Admin Web Client is 90% there. It's only the absolute newest features that haven't been completely ported.

And that kind of functionality could easily be introduced in a Domino 7 point release while we wait for Domino Next.

And I say easily knowing that I couldn't do it.

Gravatar Image1 - it´s a pitty that there is no Admin & Developer client for linux... this is the reason why I need to use a Windows OS

But maybe...
