PHP and Domino -- Where is SOA?

Category Programming
Andrei Kouvchinnikov has written up a DeveloperWorks article on integrating PHP with Domino. Jake Howlett did an amazing series on Domino and PHP with his LAMP articles. What I don't understand, is why isn't the integration happening at the web services layer? Jake's article was written with Domino 6 in mind. But, in Domino 7 it just so much simpler to employ a web service for a PHP driven server.

Even with 5.x, I always used to approach the question of Domino integration from a web-services perspective (when a MS consultant bragged about .NET support for web services, I showed him one I'd written 4 years earlier in Domino...). And with 7, it's so painless. I think a lot of the developers who use PHP aren't really looking at things from the SOA level. Maybe it's because PHP is a scripting environment as opposed to an O-O one, or because the people writing the articles aren't SOA developers? I don't know...
