How to Gauge the Job Market

Category Management

Indeed.com has a graphing feature which allows you to run queries against their job listing. It's the sort of analysis that tells you what is going up (Eclipse) and what is going down (Visual Basic).

If multiple entries are made, then the results are presented in an overlapping chart, as I did with the graphic on this page. I wouldn't treat the data as a scientific conclusion, but it does provide a reality check against suspicions and bravado.

Gravatar Image2 - Kit: I agree with you about the findings. My intuition suggests that Lotus Notes ranks much higher than Outlook only because it is a more specific job skill than with Microsoft Outlook, which is probably assumed. I wouldn't expect working with Microsoft Word to have much play in job description, yet I know it has captured 90%+ of market share.

The statistic that I found compelling, was the flatline for both Domino and Exchange. It looks like a mature messaging market, equally divided (in terms of administration professionals) between the two vendors.

I'm a little puzzled about the low representation for Sametime, as I expected it to be included in more of the Domino descriptions. Apparently, not as many Domino administrators are using Sametime, when they could be doing so for free.

And, the most most interesting indicator from the Indeed.com graph is that I don't see any downslide for Lotus.

Gravatar Image1 - While, as you point out it's not a non scientific sampling, I suspect the results are pretty close to accurate with the exception of the MS Outlook curve. Doing a search on their site for "Lotus Notes" or "Microsoft Exchange" returns jobs for administrators and developers, but a search for Microsoft Outlook returns a lot of "familiarity with" type listings that are really for other types of jobs where Outlook is just used.

Nonetheless it certainly shows that there is still quite a demand for Lotus related jobs.
