Big Picture on Sametime 7.5

Category IBM/Lotus
Peter O'Kelly has his final analysis of Lotusphere:

With the refined and updated IBM Lotus real time plan unveiled at Lotusphere 2006, however, it’s clear that Sametime is once again the center of IBM’s real-time communication/collaboration strategy.

While I agree with O'Kelly's assessment, I look at it differently, from an architectural perspective. Sametime 7.5 is really Part Two of the big picture for IBM/Lotus collaboration products which are built on the Eclipse platform.

Part One is the Workplace Collaboration Server and the Workplace Managed Client. Part Three will be the Domino Hannover client built on the Eclipse Workplace Managed Client architecture.

I think it's a clear progression, and I'm not so sure that I'd put anything one thing at "the center." I would say, though, it looks as if IBM has had a consistent vision and is making good on its claims.

Lotus has a Sametime Future site, so everyone can keep up-to-date on 7.5.

Update: I spoke too soon. Peter O'Kelly has put out one final posting on Lotusphere. Interestingly, he clearly identifies the uniqueness of Domino:

. . . Notes/Domino capabilities for collaborative applications don’t currently have a direct counterpart in the Microsoft product family. . . .
