Washington, DC Lotus User Group Meeting
Category DC Events
Last night was the Washington, DC Lotus User Group session. You can see from the picture that everyone dressed for the occasion. Jerry Dausman demoed connecting .NET to Domino via web services.
Well, mostly he was able to demonstrate the web services connectivity. He was able to do so earlier in the week, with the test source that I supplied. But, last night, the .NET code wasn't able to reconcile some aspect of the installation. Jerry doesn't know, yet, if it was on his side or on Domino's. Which means, that we have a mystery that he will solve and post in an upcoming blog entry.
Allison Pang did a great job showing off her Sager Laptop, oh, and also the latest release of Quickplace 7. The Sager weighs in about 16 lbs, has a widescreen, a cornucopia of device interfaces . . . and no VGA output (it does have a digital output, though). So, to get it working with the overhead, with 15 minutes to go before our group meeting, we set up VNC between the laptop and a system connected to the overhead monitor.
About Quickplace 7, it's definitely new and improved. Allison was able to simultaneously demonstrate the administration, new features, and still answer all the technical questions. If you are cognizant of the Web 2.0 motif, then I'd say that Quickplace 7 is about as far as you can go with Web 1.0. Workplace has a lot of overlap with Quickplace, and I can see an easy transition from one to the other.
Finally, we discussed the upcoming Lotusphere sessions, and I took hand counts of the hottest topics of interest:
The last point surprised me the most, but from local Business Partners to clients, Workplace has yet to generate a compelling vision. I'm hoping to look closer at Workplace and its relation to Domino at Lotusphere. At LS '05, I came away impressed with the technology and the message. But, over the last 12 months, I haven't seen wide scale adoption of Workplace's story. As a matter of fact, in this Lotus User Group, I hear more details about Sharepoint than I do Workplace.
