Finding Administrator Names Through AdminP

Category Administration

This is a great tip for sorting through your Domino Directory to find all references to a group, administrator, or server. If you look at your Domino Administration client, under the Server/Analysis tabs, you can find a tool for “Find Server.”

The purpose of this tool is to ferret out all references to retired servers in the Domino Directory. But, the tool can also be used to sort out any instance of a particular group, or even an administrator (a especially useful technique when an administrator leaves).

Here's how to do it.

Because the dialog box presents a drop down list of server names, it's not immediately obvious that the list is editable. So, instead of choosing a server name, you can enter the name of your last administrator--you know, the one that insisted on putting his own name directly into every server document and a myriad of groups.

After entering the name, you'll need to trigger Adminp to run the request (or patiently wait for it to happen on its schedule). Go to the server console and enter "tell adminp process new." Notice, I'm not recommending "process all," which is not a good idea on a busy server as you can accidently trigger a rash of admin request processing that is normally scheduled after hours (the server document has a setting for the Adminp schedule).

Once Adminp has run, then you can open up the Administration Request database (Admin4.nsf) and you'll see a document entitled, "Find Name in Domain." Now, if I was a skeptical person, I'd wonder why the original dialog was limited to only servers, but in the AdminP database a more ubiquituous "Find Name" is the title. Afterall, that's what we are doing--finding a name, whether a server or group or even a person.

When you open up the document you'll find a comprehensive list of each document of the Domino Directory that contains a reference to the name that you were seeking.

I wouldn't classify this as a pay-grade tip, just a handy application of the Find Server tool which extends your reach.
